This course is designed to introduce users to the underlying principles of classical mass spectrometry and teach the fundamental processes involved in interpreting electron ionization (EI) and chemical ionization (CI) mass spectra. Course topics include: • Electron ionization theory • Chemical ionization theory • The nitrogen rule • The double bond equivalent formula • Isotopes for interpretation purposes • Fragmentation mechanisms • Commercial and user libraries • Computer tools for spectral interpretation
